Temple of the Holy Sepulchre
Round Church, Cambridge, United Kingdom
Description:
The Church of the Holy Sepulcher, also known as the Round Church, is located in the center of the English city of Cambridge. It is one of the oldest operating structures not only in Cambridge, but throughout England. The prototype of the temple was the rotunda in the Jerusalem church of the Holy Sepulchre.
The church was built around 1130. Originally conceived as a chapel on a busy road where travelers could stop and commune with Jesus through prayer, the church gained parish status two centuries later. During the 15th century, a number of reconstruction works were carried out here, which changed the original appearance of the temple. In place of the small windows made in the Norman style, larger Gothic windows came, and a polygonal bell tower was added.
Currently, there are no services here, as the church simply cannot accommodate everyone. However, it does not stand idle: there are regularly held exhibitions on the influence of the Christian religion on the development of England, as well as religious lectures and concerts.
