Pythagoras School

School of Pythagoras, Northampton Street, Cambridge, UK

Description:

The Pythagoras School, located in Northampton Street, is part of St. John’s College, which in turn is part of the University of Cambridge. Today, this building is used as a performance venue for a college drama circle.

The building of the School of Pythagoras was built in the early 13th century, even before the foundation of the college itself. In the middle of the 16th century, a new extension in the form of a small mansion was added to the eastern part of the building, where a dormitory for graduate students Merton Hall is now open.

The original building of the School of Pythagoras was used as a private house, which after almost three centuries was sold to the University of Cambridge. Before being taken over by the St. John’s College Theatre Club, the building was in a dilapidated state for a long time. No one can explain where this unusual name came from, but it does not detract from the historical value of this oldest building in Cambridge.
