St. Thomas Hospital
Description:
London hospital, known since the XII century. It was originally dedicated in honor of St. Thomas Becket, and later in honor of the Apostle Thomas. For centuries it remained an advanced medical institution. In 1537, the first English Bible was printed on the grounds of the hospital, and Florence Nightingale, the first sister of mercy, worked and founded her school here. Architectural interest is the complex of old hospital buildings on the north side of St. Thomas Street. Here you can see several old houses in the Georgian style and the church of St. Thomas, in the bell tower of which the old operating theater (analogue of a modern operating room) is located. Now there is a museum in its premises. The modern hospital building is located on the banks of the Thames opposite the Palace of Westminster, it is of only historical interest. Since it is forbidden by a special act to die in the Houses of Parliament, all those who die within its walls are officially considered dead. Thomas.
