Monument-model of the ship "Victory"

National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London SE10 9NF

Description:

In the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich installed a bottle with a model of the ship “Victory”, located inside it. The author of the project was Yinka Shonibare, a British artist of Nigerian origin.

The model of Nelson's ship, which participated in the Battle of Trafalgar, was made on a scale of 1:30. The length of the bottle is 5 meters, the diameter is almost 3 meters. Such figures give the right to argue that the English model of the ship in a bottle is considered the largest in the world.

The model of the ship "Victory", like the real one, has 37 sails and 80 guns. The sails are decorated in African style. The hull of the ship is made of larch and oak, and inside - of brass, string and canvas. A bottle of plexiglass was ordered in Rome.

The monument to Nelson’s flagship ship was moved to the National Maritime Museum in January 2012, before that it was located in Trafalgar Square, and occupied a place on the fourth pedestal next to Nelson’s column and three pedestals with statues of generals and the king.
