Monument to Prince Albert

Kensington, Westminster, London SW7, UK

Description:

The Prince Albert Memorial is a monument to a young man in uniform, located in Kensingston Park in London. The prince is presented in the clothes of the Cavalier of the Order of the Garter, and holds a catalog of the World Exhibition, surrounded by sculptural groups. This monument has a height of about 54 meters and was commissioned by the great Queen Victoria, who wished to perpetuate the memory of her husband - Prince Albert. He died tragically of typhus in 1861.

The sculptural group consists of various animal figures that symbolize the continents (buffalo - America, camel - Africa, bull - Europe, elephant - Asia). It also includes 169 sculptures of the most famous people of the Victorian era: scientists, composers, poets, artists and architects.

Designed by Georg Gilbert Scott in neo-Gothic style. In 1875, the monument was unveiled and cost the Queen £120,000.
