Monument to Y.A. Gagarin

Alley Mall, London, UK

Description:

The monument to Yuri Gagarin in London is located on the Mall Alley, near Trafalgar Square and the Admiralty Arch. The composition, timed to the 50th anniversary of Gagarin’s visit to England, was opened on July 14, 2011 London Monument is a copy of the monument in Lubertsy near Moscow, created by Soviet sculptor Anatoly Novikov.

It became symbolic that the monument to the first man in space was installed in front of the monument to the English discoverer of lands James Cook.

The idea of the sculptural composition is simple and understandable: an ordinary man with an open face, dressed in a spacesuit, spreading his arms, walks along the globe’s orbit, winding into the Moebius ribbon, as a symbol of the infinity of the Universe.
