Description:
The monument to the women of World War II, erected in 2005, is located in the center of Whitehall Street, near Parliament Square.
The author of the monument is sculptor John W. Mills. For the creation of a memorial designed to commemorate the work of more than 7 million women who participated in World War II, Queen Elizabeth II provided 1 million pounds.
The monument is a 22-foot-tall pedestal, around the perimeter of which are hung seventeen bronze sets of clothing worn by women during the war. These are working uniforms, nurses’ clothes, uniforms of the land and naval forces, police, gas bags and even a gas welding helmet.
