Piccadilly Square

Piccadilly, City of Westminster, London, UK

Description:

Piccadilly Square is a major transport hub and a famous square in the west part of London in the Westminster area.

The square was built in 1819 by John Nash. The word “piccadilly” means a situation when a lot of people gather in a particular place, which is why the square received this name.

The landmark and symbol of Piccadilly is the Shaftesbari Fountain, erected in memory of the charity work of Lord Shaftesbari. It was built in 1893. The winged nude figure of the god Anteros, the god of “selfless love”, on top of the monument symbolizes the charity of the count.

The square also houses the 600-seat Criterion Theatre, designed by Thomas Verity. The London Pavilion is a music hall, cinema and shopping centre built in 1859. After connecting the building with the Trocadero Centre, the pavilion became known as London Trocadero.

The square also has numerous neon signs that appeared in the early twentieth century.
