Carnaby Street
1 Marlborough Ct, London, Greater London W1F 7EE
Description:
Carnaby Street is a pedestrian shopping street in London located in the SoHo area. Now this street is home to countless boutiques and retail stores.
The street was named after the Carnaby House, built in 1683. The street was founded in 1685 or 1686 and in 1690 was already completely built up with small houses.
In 1958, Carnaby opened its first boutique, founded by John Stephen. And other boutiques have already followed.
In the 1960s, Carnaby was considered a gathering area for all London hippies. In addition to independent fashion boutiques (such as Lord John, Merc, Mary Quant and others), many musical, underground bars were located in Carnaby, for example, the Roaring Twenties. Bands like the Rolling Stones, The Who and Small Faces could be seen right there. As a result, Carnaby was constantly crowded, and similar to Haight Ashbury in the United States, Carnaby became the capital of swinging London in the 60s.
