London

Whitehall Street

Whitehall Pl, City of Westminster, United Kingdom

Description:

The central London street of Whitehall originates from the British Parliament and ends with Trafalgar Square. The street is directly associated with the British government.

The name of the street comes from the name of the large Whitehall Palace, which used to be on the street, but in 1698 was destroyed by fire. The street was originally a wide road leading to the front of the palace. Built in 1622 by Inigo Jones, the banquet house is the only surviving part of the former palace. The street owes its current appearance to redevelopment and its construction in the XIX century.

The street is dominated by military buildings, including those of the Ministry of Defence, the former headquarters of the British Army and Navy, the Royal Institution, the Horse Guard and the Admiralty. There are also numerous military monuments on the street.
