Manchester Central Library

St Peters Square, Manchester M2 5PD, United Kingdom

Description:

Manchester Central Library is an oval building located south of the Town Hall Extension. It is the headquarters of all libraries and information services in Manchester, with approximately 22 libraries.

This library is just a treasure chest of exceptionally rare books and special fascinating collections. There you can see collections of books on science, medicine, politics, philosophy, history, art and many other valuable copies.

The Central Library was designed by architect E. Vincent Harris and was built between 1930 and 1934. It is because of its neoclassical architectural features that it is considered much older than its age. The forms of the library are borrowed from Roman architecture - the Roman Pantheon became the prototype, which can be clearly seen on the ground floor.

In 2011, a project for the reconstruction of the library was adopted, the completion is planned for 2014 and that is why the library is now inaccessible to visitors, and the city council allocated about 170 million euros for the reconstruction!
