Church of the Holy Cross
611 Ashton New Rd, Manchester, Greater Manchester M11 4UA, UK
Description:
One of Manchester’s many attractions is the Church of the Holy Cross, built in 1866 by William Butterfield. The monastery is one of the highest buildings of the city, it is made of red and bard brick, and a light hewn stone is visible in the facade.
On the south side of the monastery there is a high tower with a pyramidal roof covered with a slate, and a beautiful arched opening, made in the classical Gothic style, which is characteristic of the Victorian era.
By now, the interior of the monastery has undergone significant changes, a significant part of the furniture made of mahogany was lost. But in excellent condition preserved beautiful stained glass windows, patterns of colored stone and tiles, as well as a majestic altar made of pink marble. Near the Church of the Holy Cross are the graves of seven soldiers who died during the First and Second World Wars.
