St. Mary's Church
12 Churchgate, Stockport, Greater Manchester SK1 1YA, United Kingdom
Description:
St Mary's Church is one of the main architectural monuments in South Manchester. It was founded in 1853-1858 in the neo-Gothic style. The building material for the building was sandstone, and the roof is made of tiles. The height of the spire of St. Mary’s Church reaches 73 meters, which allowed it to take 18th place in the list of the highest temples in the UK.
For some time the monastery was in desolation, it was subjected to acts of vandalism and gradually destroyed, until in 1950 it was restored by order of local authorities. The Church of St. Mary ceased to function in 1981. Despite this, it still harmoniously fits into the surrounding Victorian buildings and is the decoration of this ensemble.
At one time, the Church of St. Mary used the African Methodist Evangelical Church for services. Now the building is reserved for apartments, and its interior is completely destroyed and changed. Outwardly, this building, with a soaring spire in the sky, emphasizes the desire of man for the beautiful and sublime.
