St. Mary's Church of the Virgin
31 Church Rd, Eccles M30, Greater Manchester, United Kingdom
Description:
The Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Eccles is an Anglican parish church, the first mention of which dates back to the XIII century. In 1868 there was a fire, which left only stone walls. In 1879 the church was completely restored. Due to the fact that the reconstruction fell on the Victorian era, the building was rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style.
On the west side of the church there is a wide square tower with a mechanical clock, under the roof of which there is a small bell tower with one massive bell. The flaped stained glass windows depict the faces of British saints and Church teachers. Heavy wooden doors are decorated with carved patterns.
In the center of the church hall there is a wooden carved altar, around which old paintings hang. Along the nave are two rows of massive cast iron columns with pilasters. To the right of the altar arch is an organ niche.
The Church of St. Mary is a unique architectural monument and is of great historical value.
