Hume Arch Bridge

Princess Rd and Stretford Rd, Manchester M15, United Kingdom

Description:

One of Manchester’s many architectural landmarks is the Hulme Arch pedestrian bridge, built in May 1996. Its length is 52 meters, width – 18 meters, and weight – 365 tons. During the construction of the structure, concrete and steel were used, and its pedestrian surface is covered with asphalt. The bridge is supported by twenty-two steel cables, which are attached to the arch height of 25 meters. It consists of six prefabricated sections, which are interconnected so that it seems as if it is one solid structure.

The construction of the bridge is only part of a project to revive Manchester’s Hulme district. Local civil engineers call the design a perfect example of how creative thought combined with the latest technology can be used to create a structure that captures the public imagination. Indeed, compared to the existing buildings of the area, msot looks quite modern.

In 1998, the Hume Arch Bridge received four awards: RIBA Award for Architecture, Structural Steel Design Awards, Civic Trust Award Commendation and Civil Engineers Merit Award.
