Victoria Bridge

42-46 Victoria St, Manchester, Greater Manchester M3 1ST, UK

Description:

One of Manchester’s many attractions is the stone arched Victoria Bridge, built in 1839. It was named after the great Queen Victoria. The structure crosses the Irwell River and connects two areas of Manchester. The bridge replaced the medieval bridge called Salford Old Bridge, which dates back to the XIV century.

The cost of the Victoria Bridge was estimated at £20,800. It was inaugurated on 20 June 1839 and visited by Queen Victoria in October 1851. The structure was made of sandstone, its length is about 100 feet. In 1988, the Victoria Bridge was included in the list of the main attractions of England.

Many tourists notice subtle Gothic notes in the architecture of the bridge. This is expressed in decorative lanterns and forged gear grilles located on both sides of the structure. Currently, the bridge is crossed by a road that allows traffic in only one direction.
