Albert Square

Albert Square, Manchester M2, United Kingdom

Description:

Albert Square is one of the main public places in Manchester, and there are also majestic buildings of the Victorian era, built in the neo-Gothic style. In addition, there are a number of monuments, the most famous of which is the Memorial of Albert – the famous British Prince.

The square, also named in his honor, was laid out specifically to provide a place for this monument. Its construction took place from 1863 to 1867. In 1868, the construction of the town hall began here, which was completed by 1877. In the early 1970s, a plan was drawn up to build a subway line connecting Albert Square to nearby St. Peter's Square. This project was eventually cancelled and the station was not built.

In April 1972, a nature reserve was opened in the vicinity of Albert Square, but in 1981 it was incorporated into the territory of the nearby Lincoln Square. The main attractions of Albert Square, in addition to the memorial and the town hall, is the fountain, erected for the sixtieth anniversary of Queen Victoria.
