Oxford

Oxford excursion

Description:

Oxford is located about 90 kilometers northwest of London in the upper reaches of the same Thames. At this point, the Thames (for local Isis) is very narrow and shallow, so cattle could easily be forded from one bank to the other. Here, at the intersection of trade routes, in Anglo-Saxon times, the settlement of Oxenforda arose. The name Oxford in translation means "bull ford". By the 7th century, the monastery of St. Fridesvida was located here, which became the patron saint of the city. In the Normandy period, a royal castle was built here. By the 12th century, Oxford was a flourishing and wealthy city; it acquired the status of a royal city, there were religious houses, the first universities appeared.

During the tour, we will talk about how the city was built up and developed, remember the early chronicles and legends adored by students. We will follow how the relations between the citizens were built, how the first universities were born, how the statutes and canons of education were gradually developed. We will wander the magnificent streets, between the incredible beautiful Gothic buildings, along the very colleges that make up the famous Oxford University.

There are 39 colleges in Oxford, the oldest of which are in the city centre. Colleges are autonomous and self-governing. We will visit the most interesting of them, see their territory, dining rooms, chapels, talk about the structure and traditions of each individually. How is the learning process, in what relationship are colleges with the university, which are considered the best, which of the famous personalities studied at Oxford.

We will see the Sheldon Theatre – a place of university ceremonies, musical concerts and lectures. The Bodleian Library building and the Radcliffe Chamber building are both unique and belong to the Oxford Library, which is considered the largest academic library in Britain.

We will visit the Church of St. Mary - one of the oldest in Oxford, originally used for university lectures and ceremonies. We can climb to the observation deck from which there will be magnificent views of the city.

We will look at the preserved observation towers of the city wall, enter the city market, walk through narrow streets, and look into the oldest taverns of the city. Yes, and I'll show you the famous staircase from Harry Potter, just as we'll talk about Alice in Wonderland and its famous author.
