Hutchison House Museum

270 Brock Street Corner of Bethune St., Peterborough, Canada

About the company:

The Hutchison House Museum is the oldest house in Peterborough.

It was built in 1837 by volunteers for Dr. John Hutchison, who was the city's first physician. Dr. Hutchison in the city was a highly respected man and lived in the house until 1847. He contracted typhus from his patients and died. In 1851, the house was sold to prominent local merchant James Harvey, and in 1969, the house was donated to the historic society.

The museum contains Hutchison’s medical instruments, books and furniture, the original Peterborough map, and geodetic instruments. Particularly noteworthy is the open kitchen with an open hearth for cooking.

The reconstruction of the building was carried out in the mid-1900s. The house received the status of a museum in 1978.
