Canongate Church
153 Canongate, Edinburgh, Midlothian EH8 8BN, United Kingdom
Description:
Edinburgh is an old town. Walking along its streets you will find many beautiful buildings that are remembered on their bridge dukes and kings. But to fully experience the spirit of medieval Edinburgh, visit one of the surviving churches, such as Canongate Church. It is one of the most beautiful cathedrals both outside and inside.
Most of Edinburgh's churches belong to the Anglican religion, which throughout English history has defined the culture of the Scottish people. Canongate Church was founded in 1688 by order of King James VII. The church is made in Dutch style, but in 1882 was reconstructed for the installation of the organ. After the changes required by the instrument, the church became much brighter and more spacious. You can listen to the organ every week during the Sunday service, but special concerts are often organized on weekdays.
In the ancient cemetery near the church are buried the famous economist Adam Smith, biographer Dugald Stewardy poet Robert Fergusson, whose statue stands near the church gate.
