Church on the street. St. Vincent

St. Vincent Street, Glasgow G2 7LQ, Scotland, UK

Description:

St. Vincent Church Street or St. Vincent Street Church is a Presbyterian church in Glasgow, Scotland. The building was designed by architect Alexander Thompson, also known as "Greek" Thompson. Construction was completed in 1859 by order of the former United Presbyterian Church of Scotland. In the 1960s, the building was acquired by the Glasgow Corporation.

The church building is considered one of the most remarkable in Glasgow, it was designed with an emphasis on its immediate purpose - to be a place of worship for a local parish. In the main sanctuary, where Sunday services take place, the pulpit (the place where speeches are read) is located in the center, right in front of the parishioners. Outside, the building has a very impressive shape, a massive tower rises high above the street, and near the entrance visitors meet a large colonnade.

The church is currently operated by the Free Church Society of Scotland, which took over the church in 1971, although it is formally owned by Glasgow City Council. Since 1998, the building has been on the World Watch list of the World Monuments Fund, which helped restore the tower.
