Canongate, The Royal Mile, Edinburgh, Midlothian EH8 8DX
Description:
All tourists coming to Scotland will definitely visit Holyroodhouse Palace. This place is as great in importance as Buckingham Palace, Big Ben and others. Holyroodhouse is the official residence of the English monarchs in Scotland. Every year the Queen of Britain spends a summer holiday here in July.
Initially, the palace was the Holyrood Abbey of the Augustinian Order. It was built in 1128 and was used for various royal ceremonies and receptions. At the abbey there was a small hotel where the royals and their guests who arrived at the reception stayed. Later, the hotel was rebuilt into a luxurious Baroque palace, and the new building became the main royal palace of Scotland.
During the tour you can get acquainted with the interior of the palace, as the interiors remain intact. And since 2008, Holyroodhouse has presented an exhibition dedicated to the Order of the Thistle - the highest order of Scotland. Tourists can also visit the Royal Gallery, where the richest collection of paintings in Britain is collected.
