Edinburgh castle
Edinburgh, City of Edinburgh EH1, United Kingdom
Description:
The history of Edinburgh Castle (and with it the city of Edinburgh itself) is so vague and shrouded in mystery that it constantly gives rise to controversy among archaeologists. Some suggest that references to the first settlements can be found in Ptolemy, who in one of the works describes the settlement of the Votadins, a Celtic tribe who lived in the north of Scotland.
The castle is located on top of the Castle Rock, an extinct volcano that has been inhabited since time immemorial. Throughout its history, the fortress has been a key to Scotland. Built initially in the early Middle Ages, the castle was overhauled at the beginning of the XVII century and adapted for defense using serf artillery.
The castle gives the impression of an impregnable fortress. The three sides of the fortress are protected by sheer cliffs, and access to the castle was limited by a steep road on the fourth (eastern) side. The road can only be reached through the esplanade – a long and empty, completely shot from the fortress sloped section, where the Royal Edinburgh parade of military orchestras takes place annually.
