People's Palace

Templeton St, Glasgow, Glasgow City G40 1AT, United Kingdom

Description:

The People's Palace and the adjacent Winter Garden are a museum and greenhouse located in Glasgow Green Park. They were discovered in 1898 by the Earl of Rosebury. At that time, the area was considered to be very unfavorable, and the People's Palace was designed to improve the overall situation, as well as provide residents with a new cultural center.

Initially, on the first floor of the building there were rest rooms and reading rooms, on the second - a museum, and on the third - a huge art gallery. In the 40s of the XX century, the palace became the Museum of History, the exposition of which told about the life and inhabitants of Glasgow. Now his windows reproduce the everyday life of the citizen. In the 1980s, beautiful greenhouses were equipped near the palace. In 2005, the Doulton Fountain was moved here.

The architecture of the Glasgow People's Palace deserves special attention. It is made in a classical style with some baroque elements. The facade of the building is decorated with small columns and stucco details. On the roof of the building there is a large spherical dome under which there are statues. In general, the People's Palace has a strict, but rather harmonious appearance.
