St Cuthbert's parish church

5 Lothian Road, Edinburgh EH1 2EP, United Kingdom

Description:

St Cuthbert Parish Church is located in the centre of Edinburgh on Lothian Road, surrounded by an ancient cemetery. During the nineteenth century, the parish of this church consisted mainly of wealthy burghers who lived in the still developing area of the New Town.

St. Chapel. Cuthberta was first mentioned in the VIII century. It is believed that the modern church building appeared on the same site, making the temple the oldest in Edinburgh. Between 1787 and 1790, land was drained north of the church to expand the existing cemetery. Now there are hundreds of monuments and three Gothic mausoleums that deserve attention.

The architecture and interior decoration of the monastery is very unusual for the Presbyterian church. It reflects both the influence of the Scottish Catholic movement and is associated with Roman Catholicism and Anglicanism. As a result, the church has repeatedly found itself at the epicenter of confessional disputes, which have appeared on the pages of national newspapers and at meetings of the General Assembly.
