Dong Castle

Castle Rd, Doune, Perthshire FK16 6EA

Description:

Dong Castle is considered one of the best preserved castles in the UK.

The exact dates of its construction are unknown, but it is assumed that it was erected at the end of the XIV century. Looking at the castle from a bird's eye view, you can see that it is built in the shape of the letter L, which is traditional for Scottish castles, which served to shelter the feudal lord during a siege or uprising.

At the end of the eastern part of Dong Castle is the main entrance that leads to the tower, at its foot there is a well, and above, according to historians, there were the apartments of the owners.

Then there are two halls: the Lord’s Hall, which can be accessed directly from the street, and the Great Hall, which served as a reception for guests and feasts and celebrations.

There is also a chapel at the very top, and at the very bottom there is a cellar and storage facilities.

Now the castle is widely known due to the fact that several films were shot there. One of them is Monty Python and the Holy Grail. In this film, Dong Castle appears several times as various castles. It was also used as the set of one of the episodes of the series “Game of Thrones”.
