Abbotsford Castle
Abbotsford, Melrose, Roxburghshire TD6 9BQ, UK
Description:
Abbotsford Castle is the ancestral estate of the famous writer Walter Scott. He bought a small farm estate, then dismantled it and built Abbotsford Castle on the site.
The writer admired the castles in the neighborhood, and he tried to use the details he liked in the arrangement of his house. So, a large number of turrets and balconies were made, carving on oak elements, as in the Palace of Hollyrood, a painted ceiling, similar to the ceiling of the Rosslyn chapel and much more.
Walter Scott was also remembered by contemporaries and went down in history as a collector of antiquities. He collected a collection of unique antiquities, which is still in the castle. There are furniture donated by George IV, a fireplace watch by Marie Antoinette, a medallion with a portrait of Goethe, a crucifix once owned by Mary Stewart, a silver urn by John Byron, a huge collection of weapons and armor.
In 2011, with the support of the Scottish government, work began on the improvement of the adjacent territory of the castle. Restaurants and shopping malls, hotels and motels are planned - all that could make the experience of visiting Abbotsford even more pleasant.
