Eileen Donan Castle

Eilean Donan Castle, Dornie, Kyle of Lolalsh, Scotland IV40 8DX

Description:

Eileen Donan Castle ("Donan Island") is located on the island at the confluence of the waters of Loch Daich, Loch Long and Log Elsh. The castle is considered one of the most photographed and most visited castles as it is in excellent condition. Many films were filmed in the building and many solemn ceremonies were held.

The name of the castle comes from the name of the monk Donan, who lived on the island in the VII century. The first fortress on the island was built in the XIII century and was the most important fortress until 1719, after which the castle was destroyed. In the early twentieth century, the castle was bought and restored by Mac Ray-Gilstrap. McRae’s generation still lives in several rooms.

The castle filmed the films: “Ghost goes to the West”, “Master Ballantre”, “Highlander”, “Mio, my Mio”, “The whole world is not enough”, “Friend of the bride”. Eyewitnesses also claim that the castle is inhabited by the ghost of Eileen Donan (a Spanish soldier who died here in 1719) and the ghost of Lady Mary.
