Lauriston Castle
2A Cramond Rd S, Edinburgh, City of Edinburgh EH4 5QD
Description:
Lauriston Castle is located 6.4 km northwest of Edinburgh. Built at the end of the XVI century by Sir Archibald Napierre, father of the famous mathematician and astronomer John Napierre, it is a beautiful architectural monument that combines styles of different eras.
Lauriston's predecessor castle is known to have stood on the same site in the Middle Ages, but was almost completely destroyed during the attack on Edinburgh in 1544. Almost half a century later, in 1590, Sir Archibald Napierre built a house on the site of the old castle, which passed to his son, John Napierre, who later became a famous mathematician and astronomer. Over the following centuries, the castle passed from one owner to another.
Lauriston's last owner, businessman William Robert Reid, acquired the castle in 1902. Together with his wife, he filled the house with a collection of elegant furniture and works of art, turning it into a real masterpiece of the Edwardian style. Before his death, Reid, who had no children, bequeathed a castle to Scotland. The only condition was that the situation should be preserved. Now you can admire beautiful samples of furniture, paintings, collections of porcelain and other art objects. Around the castle lies an Italian rose garden and a Japanese garden - a symbol of Edinburgh's friendship with Kyoto.
