Church of Scotland Ministry Building

113 George St, Edinburgh, City of Edinburgh EH2, UK

Description:

The Church of Scotland building is located in the New Town, a central area of Edinburgh. These impressive buildings are widely known in church circles. Here are the cabinet of the Minister, the Treasurer General, the Legal Department, as well as the offices of representatives of all the cathedrals and churches of Scotland.

The buildings were designed in 1909-1911 for the United Free Church of Scotland by architect Sidney Mitchell, known for his fondness for Scandinavian style.

The first alterations of the building occurred in 1930, when a large bookstore on the east side of the first floor was added to it. The change was originally intended to be on the west side of 123 George Street, but this did not happen. However, this part of George Street and the chapel nearby belong to the ministry.

There have been occasional proposals to move the department to a new building outside Edinburgh. However, such a decision could only be taken by the General Assembly, whose members were not yet considering it.
