Museum of Authors
Lady Stair's House, Lady Stair's Close, Lawnmarket, Edinburgh EH1 2PA, United Kingdom
About the company:
The Museum of Scottish Writers is dedicated primarily to three outstanding authors - Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson. The expositions of the museum are located in an ancient mansion of the XVII century, owned by Lady Star House and known as the Countess Star mansion. Here you can look at the personal belongings of writers, their portraits, work offices, drafts of works and rare photographs.
At the permanent exhibitions you can see chess played by Walter Scott and his rocking horse. The museum was even given a printing press, on which Walter Scott’s first novel Waverley was printed and one of the first copies with the author’s signature. Here are the portraits and draft manuscripts of Robert Burns. Stevenson’s rod and pipe are preserved, as well as numerous outlandish souvenirs and trophies brought from his travels. Interesting to see Robert Stevenson's closet. It was made by the famous furniture master Brody, who, in addition to honest work, was a famous criminal-burglar. It is believed that this closet served as the prototype for the creation of the novel The Strange Story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, also known for their double lives.
Even if you are not familiar with classical English literature, you will be interested in listening to the mysterious and sometimes mystical stories of these things.
