Holy Trinity Church
Old Town, Stratford-upon-Avon, CV37 6BG, UK
Description:
In the Church of the Holy Trinity, William Shakespeare was baptized in 1564, and here he was buried in 1616. The temple is also called the “Shakespeare Church”.
The church was built in 1210 on the site of a former Saxon monastery. Now the Holy Trinity Church is the oldest building in Stratford-upon-Avon, as well as the most visited. The main attraction for tourists is the tomb of the great British poet and playwright. Above the grave is a bust of the poet.
In addition to the grave in the cathedral, there are many other interesting things: a door hammer of the XIV century, installed on the door of the altar part, 26 seats decorated with carvings with images on secular, mythological and religious themes. Many objects in the church are monuments of the pre-Reformation era. The temple is decorated with stained glass windows with images of saints.
The surviving parish book lists the name of Shakespeare, baptized and buried here. The book is now in the Shakespeare Foundation.
