Koch Castle

Tongwynlais, Cardiff CF15 7JS, UK

Description:

Koch Castle in Welsh means "Red Castle", and the castle deserves admiration.

Almost nothing is known about the first years of the castle. It is believed that it was a Norman castle built XI-XII centuries. The building had an oval shape and three round towers. Shortly after construction, Koch was abandoned and nearly destroyed.

At the end of the XIX century, what remained of the castle belonged to the Marquis of Bute John Crichton-Stewart. He wanted to rebuild Koch Castle to make it a residence for himself and his family. The Marquis really wanted the castle to look like a medieval one, for which all the interiors are made in the Victorian style, and the wooden facade was replaced by a stone one.

The castle is now open for free visit. Visitors can enjoy beautiful collections of paintings and antiques, visit the chambers of the Marquis and his family, experiencing the true spirit of the Middle Ages.
