Conowie Castle
United Kingdom, Wales, Conway Road
Description:
Conowie Castle, located in the town of the same name on the north coast of Wales, is undoubtedly one of the most impressive European castles. Built by Edward I at the end of the thirteenth century for a fabulous sum of fifteen thousand pounds sterling, it served as an important defensive point in a number of wars of the Middle Ages.
The majestic grey sandstone castle is built on a hill above the city. The square space of the castle is divided into inner and outer courtyards, protected by eight massive towers over twenty meters high. The western (main) and eastern (going to the river) gates of the castle are additionally protected by barbicans. Along with the castle were built and city walls, fortified by twenty-one towers.
Conui Castle is well preserved and today is open to tourists. From the towers of the castle, you can look at the city below and the mouth of the Conway River.
