St. Francis Church in Caracas
Venezuela, Caracas, Universidad Avenue
Description:
The Church of St. Francis in Caracas was built in 1570. Over the centuries, it was rebuilt several times: in 1641, its neoclassical facade was reconstructed, in sharp contrast to the appearance of the entire building.
The church is located in the historical center of the city, it is not as large and richly decorated as the Cathedral of Caracas, but its building is an example of colonial architecture.
Another feature of the Church of St. Francis is the richly inlaid Baroque altar. Also, the church is famous for the funeral of the national hero Simon Bolivar, and in 1813 from the altar of the Bolivar Church was declared the “Liberator of Venezuela”.
