Monument to Count György Festetic

kesthei, Hungary

Description:

In front of the palace of the city of Kesthei there is a very interesting monument erected in honor of Count Gyord Festetic. This monument is a symbol of the gratitude of the Hungarians to the person who has done much for education in the country. The count sits on the bench, as if watching the guests come.

The count built a wing of the palace to the south-west side, given a little later under a luxurious library. A great admirer of literature and art, the count in the early XIX century twice held in the palace rich literary holidays "Helikon". All European writers at the time wanted to visit them.

In the memory of ordinary people, the count remained as a person who sought to educate the Hungarians, and did not spare his money for this. He taught peasants how to cultivate the land using the most advanced technologies, and in 1797 he organized the first European agricultural school.
