Hortobad National Park

Hungary, Debrecen, 40 kilometers from Debrecen

Description:

Hortobagy National Park is the oldest park located in eastern Hungary. It was granted the status of a national park in 1973, and in 1999 UNESCO included it in the list of world heritage sites.

It is located on the territory of the Middle Danube lowland from Debrecen to the Tisa River, including salt marshes, steppes, swamps, lakes, and even small oak groves.

The main attraction of the park is the nine-arch bridge of 1833, as well as the Charda built near it, which is more than 300 years old. It was once an inn on the Salt Road connecting Transylvania and Buda. Today there is an ethnographic museum.

The national park serves as a habitat for a large number of birds. Of the nearly 350 bird species found here, 150 species nest continuously in the park. Arriving here ornithologists have the opportunity to watch herons, cranes, eagles, rats, luncobuses, gulls and other birds, as well as in the existing lakes there are a lot of fish.
