Eisenstadt - Forchtenstein - Sopron - Fertöd
Description:
Eisenstadt, Austrian city, center of the federal state of Burgenland. One of its attractions is the parish of the Esterhazi family, a picturesque church on a hill (Bergkirche). It is decorated with 10 chapels, 18 altars, many niches, stairs, grottoes and passages of stone and wood. The whole composition was supposed to represent the sufferings of Christ (the Way of the Cross) and attracted many pilgrims, who began to call it the eighth wonder of the world. It is here that the famous composer Joseph Haydn is buried. Some of his great works were first performed in the walls of this temple by the author. In the Esterhazy Palace you will admire the magnificent interior decoration and the famous Haydn Concert Hall.
The well-visible and impregnable fortress of Forchtenstein (Burg Forchtenstein) rises above the village of the same name in North Burgerland in Austria. It sits on a dolomite rock at an altitude of 511 meters above sea level. This fortress is the unity of the region, which was never captured by the Turks during the Ottoman Wars. For this reason, it was used by the princes of Esterhazy as a repository, where the most valuable jewels of this noble family were stored. Even now in the castle you can see the treasures that have been collected for centuries. The Armory Collection of the Princes of Esterhazy is the largest private collection of weapons in Central Europe. Since 1998, Forchtenstein Castle has hosted an exhibition of jewels that have been hidden behind the castle’s thick walls for 300 years. About 500 of the most interesting objects are now represented in the “treasury”.
The historical center of Sopron is a well-preserved monument of urban planning of the XVI-XVIII centuries. Most of the historical buildings of the city center are monuments of Austrian Baroque. The most notable are the "House of Storno", "House of Gambrinus", the column of the Holy Trinity, the Dominican Church, known under the nickname "Goat Church". St. George's Church. The Old Synagogue is one of the oldest synagogues in Central Europe, built in 1379.
