History of the city of Tapolica

Antiquity and Early Middle Ages: The territory of Tapolica has been inhabited since ancient times due to natural conditions: there are springs, groundwater and protected hills. Archaeological finds indicate the presence of the Romans, who built roads and small settlements in these places. After the fall of the Roman Empire, different tribes came here: Avars, Slavs, later Magyars.

First mention: In written sources, Tapolza was first mentioned in 1182 as the possession of Tihan Abbey. The name of the city is associated with springs and water. There is a version that "Tapolca" comes from the Slavic word "warm water" (reflects the presence of warm springs).

Middle Ages: In the 13th century, Tapolca was already a fortified settlement. In the 15th century there was a small monastery of the Order of the Dominicans, later Franciscans, which became an important cultural and religious center. Development took place around springs and mills using the power of water.

Ottoman period: In the 16th and 17th centuries, during the Turkish conquests of Hungary, Tapolza suffered greatly. The city changed hands several times: the Turks used it as a military base, and the local population either fled or lived under constant threat. After the expulsion of the Turks, a gradual recovery began.

18th and 19th centuries: In the 18th century, Tapolza was settled again: German and Hungarian families appeared. Stone houses are being built, viticulture and crafts are developing. In the 19th century, a new stage of development began: schools were opened, roads were built, trade was established. In the 1850s, the first steam-powered mill was opened.

20th century: At the beginning of the 20th century, Tapolica was actively developing thanks to the railway and industry. In 1903, the famous cave complex under the city was opened, which later became a tourist attraction. During the Second World War, Tapolza suffered from bombing, and military operations were conducted in the vicinity. In the postwar years, the city became part of socialist Hungary: industry developed, new residential areas were built.

Modernity: Since 1990, Tapolza has been actively developing tourism.

Now Tapolca is a small, cozy town (population about 12-13 thousand), which attracts tourists with natural and historical monuments.
