Fire Tower
V r utca 3, 8200 Veszpr m, Hungary
Description:
The Vesprem Fire Tower is considered a monument of defensive architecture of the country, is not used today for its intended purpose, but it offers an amazing view of the city and its surroundings. It dates back to the 13th century when King Béla IV ruled the country. Until now, the lower cylindrical part has been preserved. After several wars and an earthquake, it was so destroyed that in 1801 it was completely demolished. Wealthy families of the city raised enough money to restore this object, which would recall the glorious historical past of Vesprem. The restoration work was led by architect Henrik Tumler. It was improved and turned from a guard into a fire department, from where they monitored the neighborhoods of the city.
Today, the top of the tower can be reached by a narrow spiral staircase. At the top of the tower there is also a clock, every hour they play the tune of Antal Cermak. Hungarian composer.
There is another legend – if you hear a bell ringing on the tower, you need to make a love wish, and the wind will convey your feelings to the right person.
You can get to Vesprem from Budapest by train, intercity bus, car or taxi.
