Monastery of the Virgin Mary

1 Ngô Quyề n, Ph ng 6, Dalat, Lamdong, Vietnam 49 m SW

Description:

The Virgin Mary Monastery (aka Nha Tho Domain) was built in 1942. The monastery is one of the first Christian shrines on Vietnamese soil. The founder of the monastery is Suzanne Humbert, wife of Admiral Jean Decou. Her husband was governor of the Vichy government in Indochina, so Suzanne had the capacity to begin construction. Sadly, Suzanne died in a car crash two years after the temple opened its doors.

Since the beginning of the service, 300 nuns have lived in the monastery of the Virgin Mary, but only eight of them have survived to this day. They do not receive funding for the maintenance of the temple, because they are engaged in the sale of fruits and lollipops of their own production.

Masses are held daily at 5.30 am. Entrance is open to all who wish.
