Marble mountains
Huyề n Trâ n Cô ng Ch a, H a Hả i, Ngũ H nh S n, Da Nang, Vietnam
Description:
The Marble Mountains are located near Da Nang, near the sea. This natural monument consists of 5 stone hills, formed of marble and in ancient times former islands. In the early 19th century, King Gia Long named these mountains after five natural elements: Thuishon (Water), Mokshon (Tree), Hoashon (Fire), Kimshon (Metal) and Thoshon (Earth).
The largest of the five sacred holims is Mount Water, which houses several pagodas, the most famous of which, the Tamthai Pagoda, was built in 1825. To the left of the pagoda is an observation deck, which offers a beautiful view of the surroundings of Da Nang and all the other mountains.
You should move very carefully on Mount Water, because many side paths hide new discoveries. There are several caves that were previously used as shrines by Chamami Hindus and Vietnamese Buddhists. Later, a hospital for the Viet Cong was established here. To explore the caves you can go either with a guide, or for a small fee, you will be carried out by local boys.
At the foot of the Marble Mountains are villages of marble masters. Here you can buy original souvenirs of the finest work of skilled artisans.
