Visa to the UK
Description:
Visa to the UK for Russians in 2025!
The UK is not a member of the Schengen area and requires tourists and other Russian citizens to obtain a separate visa to visit the United Kingdom. The process of obtaining a visa to the UK is quite complex and time-consuming, significantly different from the procedure for obtaining a Schengen visa.
There are no direct flights from Russia to the UK now, so we have to use transfers. From the beginning of October 2023, those who plan to fly to other countries with a transfer in the UK are required to apply for a visa, even if they do not intend to leave the transit area of the airport. Details of the preparations for the trip and the necessary documents will be provided below.
What kind of visa is required for citizens to travel to the UK
Visa characteristics:
1. For foreign nationals intending to visit the UK for a short period of time, a Standard Visitor visa is provided. It is applicable for various purposes, such as tourism, short-term working trips, courses, visits to relatives, etc. The list of required documents depends on the specific purpose of the trip.
- The Standard Visitor visa is multiple and can have different validity periods (6 months, 2 years, 5 years or 10 years). However, this does not mean the possibility of continuous stay in the country. This visa allows you to cross the border several times, with a total stay in England up to 180 days a year.
- Working and studying in the UK is prohibited if you have a standard tourist visa. A work or student visa is required for these purposes.
- To obtain a tourist visa, the applicant needs a foreign passport, confirmation of a stable source of income in his country (to ensure return) and proof of financial solvency (having a sufficient amount in a bank account to stay in another country).
- The list of requirements is not exhaustive and may vary depending on the individual circumstances of the applicant, such as lack of official income, insufficient income, training and others. Each case may require its own set of documents.
- In case of refusal when applying for a Standard Visitor visa, there may be many reasons, ranging from an incorrectly filled out questionnaire to questionable solvency. Since the refusal is not subject to appeal or review, it is recommended to consult experts in the field in advance to minimize the risk of refusal. 2.
2. Foreign nationals wishing to come to the UK to study must obtain a student visa. The choice of type of student visa depends on the nature and duration of study.
- The Standard Visitor visa provides short-term study opportunities of up to 6 months, such as language courses; the Short-term study visa is also designed for English language studies in courses of up to 11 months; the Student visa provides the right to study at a university or college for foreign citizens over the age of 16. Obtaining this visa requires proof of English proficiency; the Child Student visa is for children between 4 and 17 years old planning long-term studies in the UK.
- To obtain a student visa, the applicant must obtain an invitation from the chosen educational institution and provide evidence of financial ability. After graduation, a foreign citizen is obliged to leave the country if he does not change his visa status, for example, to a graduate visa.
3. Graduate visa (GRADUATE ROUTE VISA) Immediately after completing studies in British educational institutions, the graduate has the opportunity to apply for a UK Graduate Visa. This relatively new visa, available from 2021, grants the right of stay for 2 years, with an increase of 1 year for PhDs.
- Applying for a graduate visa is possible only if the educational institution has a sponsored license for training foreign citizens, and not earlier than 12 months after the start of training.
- The presence of a graduate visa does not grant the right to permanent residence. However, the time spent in the country on this visa is taken into account if the foreign national decides to apply for permanent residence after 10 years of residence in the UK.
4. The UK Work Visa includes 5 subcategories depending on the field of activity (athletes, medical professionals, clergy, etc.).
- The most popular work visa is the Skilled Worker Visa (formerly known as Tier 2 General). It is used when foreign nationals plan to work for a long-term UK company. One of the important conditions is the presence of an invitation and a sponsorship certificate, which is actually a work permit for a specific employer with a corresponding license to accept foreign citizens.
- A list of occupations suitable for obtaining a skilled worker visa is available on the UK public sector website. Usually, this list includes the most demanded professions in the country. It should be noted that from July 2023, visa rules for representatives of the construction sector and the fishing industry have been simplified.
- The validity of a work visa can be up to 5 years, after which it is possible to apply for residency. During this period, the foreign citizen must be employed in a British company and in the event of a change of place of work must notify the relevant authorities.
- A work visa provides an opportunity to transport a family (spouse, permanent partner or minor children).
5. Innovator Visa (Innovator Foundation Route) The new visa, introduced in April 2023, combines the capabilities of the Innovator and Startup visas.
- Innovator Founder Visa is suitable for beginner entrepreneurs who want to start a business in England, as well as for experienced ones who transfer their successful business to this country. The validity of the visa is 3 years, after which you can apply for a residence permit. Innovator Founder visa holders are also eligible to bring their spouse, permanent partner or children under the age of 18.
- To approve an Innovator Founder visa application, a business or business project must meet three main criteria: be innovative, viable and forward-looking. In other words, the project should stand out, be well thought out and have the prospect of expanding and creating new jobs.
- It should be borne in mind that obtaining a visa is not the ultimate goal, and the business will be subject to inspections (first after 6 months, then after 12 months). In case of non-fulfillment of the plans, the visa may be withdrawn.
6. The Global Talent Visa is a special category for leaders in a specific field (science, creativity, digital industry, etc.). In order to obtain such a visa, the applicant must have significant achievements that he can document or have outstanding prospects in the chosen field.
- The Global Talent Visa is granted for up to 5 years, after which the foreign national can apply for permanent residence in the UK. In some cases, this period can be reduced to 3 years if there are special achievements.
- A person in the country on a Talent Visa has the freedom to change jobs without the need for a sponsorship certificate. The Talent Visa also allows you to bring your family, and the submission of documents for family members can be carried out simultaneously with the main applicant.
7. Transit visa is for those whose transfer on the way through England will last more than 24 hours. It allows you to temporarily leave the territory of the transport hub, but requires you to return within a certain period of time.
8. Business visa is required for foreigners planning to carry out commercial activities in the UK. Businessmen can obtain permission to set up their own business, take short-term business trips, or even obtain residence permits.
9. A visitor visa, although sometimes considered a subtype of tourist visa, allows multiple use and is issued at the invitation of a British citizen or permanent resident, mainly friends or relatives.
10. A family visa is issued at the invitation of family members with UK citizenship or residence permit, providing the possibility of residence, study or employment. This category also provides for separate permits for the entry of brides or grooms to marry residents of the country.
11. There are two types of visas for marriage:
- Visa Visitor Visa. Issued for marriage or registration of a union of same-sex partners. Foreign citizens who have received this visa must leave the country after the wedding ceremony. Marriage Visitor Visa is non-renewable and does not provide opportunities to work, study or engage in any other activity in the UK.
- Fiance Visa. Bride/Groom visa, which can be obtained by marriage between a foreign citizen and a permanent resident of the UK. This type of visa allows you to stay in the country for up to 6 months, during which it is necessary to register a marriage.
- For a marriage visa, the requirements vary depending on the type. For example, for Marriage Visitor Visa, the applicant must confirm the intention to leave the country after the ceremony, while for Fiance Visa it is required to prove the seriousness of the relationship and pass an English language test, as well as an interview.
12. Spouse, partner visas and visas for same-sex partners and spouses (couple visas) An application for a spousal visa can be made after marriage to a British citizen. The validity of a spouse visa is 2 years, after which a residence permit is automatically granted. It is also possible to apply for a partner visa for those who are not married. Same-sex marriage is also allowed in the UK and is governed by similar principles.
- The process of obtaining marital visas is complex and lengthy, as it involves the prospect of obtaining British citizenship. It also increases the risk of fictitious marriages, leading to a thorough examination of each case by visa authorities.
These types of visas, granting the right to enter the UK, represent the main categories most often used by foreign nationals to stay in the country for a short or long period of time. For more detailed information about visas and their features, it is recommended to contact professionals who, having experience in this field, will be able to provide advice, help choose the appropriate type of visa and collect the necessary documents for applying. Accompaniment by professionals minimizes the risk of rejection and increases the likelihood of a successful UK visa application.
The necessary documents for obtaining a visa to the UK must be presented in two copies - the original and a copy, including a copy of the passport page with personal data (with a photo). Copies must be of high quality and clearly legible; in the absence of copies, the original may be retained.

To apply for a British visa, you must fill out a questionnaire on the website of the visa and immigration service and pay the appropriate fee. The cost is charged in British pounds sterling, but the calculation is made in dollars. As of early 2024, the fee is $146 ($13,325у) for a six-month visa and $508 ($46,363) for a two-year visa. The amount can change and it can be checked on the official website of the migration service. If a visa is refused, the fee is not refunded.
In addition, for a business visa: Letter from the employer, invitation from the British company indicating the purpose of the trip, accommodation and payment of expenses. Documents must be provided in English or translated.
In addition, for student visa: Letter from a British university on enrollment, motivation letter, copies and original diplomas.
In addition, for a transit visa: Tickets to a third country, hotel reservation during night transit.
A foreign bank card such as Visa, Mastercard, American-Express and JCB is required to pay the fee, as Russian cards are not accepted on these sites. The Mir card doesn't fit either.
After filling out the questionnaire, tourists choose the time of application and make an appointment at the visa center in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk or Rostov-on-Don.
Availability of hotel reservation and medical insurance for visa processing
The official visa guidelines state that hotel booking is not required, nor is it necessary to have health insurance. A plane ticket is only required for a UK transit visa.
Procedure for registration and translation of documents
The required documents should be scanned and uploaded to the TLS Contact portal. Otherwise, you will have to pay for the service at the visa center, the cost of which is 2900 ов.
When translating documents from Russian into English, the signature, name, surname and contact details of the translator are mandatory. It is not required to certify the document with a notary; it is enough to confirm that the translation is correct, indicating the date.
Reviews suggest that immigration officers can accept even unprofessional transfers. However, in the case of poor quality, incompleteness or doubtful translations, they may be rejected.
At the visa center, all tourists over 5 years old undergo the procedure of photographing and fingerprinting.
Reviews on tourist forums indicate that the consideration of applications takes about a month. If you need additional documents or an invitation to an interview, the visa center will provide detailed instructions.
What an opportunity to visit Ireland
Previously, holders of an open British visa had the opportunity to visit Ireland. On October 26, 2022, Ireland removed Russia and Belarus from the list of countries with simplified entry rules. An Irish visa is also required to visit Ireland.
Supporting documents
When applying for a visa to the UK, you must comply with the requirements for accompanying documents, such as certificates from the place of work / study, bank statements, sponsorship letters, etc. All these documents must be translated into English. Self-translation can be performed by the applicant, where his contact details are indicated, or in the translation agency indicating the company details.
Biometric data
The procedure for obtaining a UK visa involves providing biometric data such as fingerprinting and photography. Fingerprints with cuts, injuries or temporary patterns (such as henna or mahendi tattoos) should not be provided. Before visiting the visa center, you must wait for the healing of wounds and abrasions, as well as the fading of tattoos. The same applies to photography – persons with abrasions, wounds, cuts or swelling will be rejected from the photographing procedure. Children under 5 years of age do not provide biometric data.
Duration and validity of visas to the UK
The time of obtaining a visa depends on the purpose of the trip, the availability of previous visas and other circumstances. This process usually takes about 15 days. It is recommended to apply for a visa in advance, preferably one month before the planned trip.
Term and validity of visas
British visas can be valid for 6 months, 2 years, 5 years or 10 years, providing the opportunity for multiple visits to the UK. In some cases, the consulate may impose entry restrictions. Interestingly, even those who have not previously had a UK visa experience can apply for long-term visas, including tourist visas.
What is required to enter the UK with a child
To travel, the child will need his own passport with a visa.
If a minor child travels independently or is accompanied by an adult who is not a parent, adoptive parent, guardian or guardian, consent to travel abroad must be obtained. For example, such a document is required for a trip with a grandmother or brother, and it is certified by a notary. The process of registration of such consent is described in a separate article on the portal Tinkoff Journal.
UK border guards can also request additional supporting documents:
- If the child and the parent have different surnames – a certificate of marriage or divorce.
- If the minor travels with only one parent, consent from the other parent.
- If the child is adopted, the relevant adoption document.
Document requirements are not detailed on the UK official website, but since visa documents are often translated into English, it is recommended to provide translations. A travel guide to the UK is also available in English.
Transit through the UK
In September 2023, the UK made changes to transit rules for Russian citizens. To determine the need for a visa in certain cases, you can use the test on the official website gov.uk. In this case, you must indicate your nationality, the purpose of the trip (transit), the direction of travel and the intention to leave the airport.
Transit without a visa is allowed if the traveler has a ticket to the destination and one of the following documents:
- Visa for the United States, Canada, Australia or New Zealand, provided that the traveler is flying through London to one of these countries or returning from them to Russia.
- A visa from Australia, Canada, New Zealand or the United States, valid no more than 6 months ago, provided the traveler returns from these countries.
- Residence permit of Australia, New Zealand or the general format of the EEA or Switzerland.
- Canadian residence permit issued after June 28, 2002.
- U.S. residence permit issued after April 21, 1998, or immigrant visa.
- Visa D of an EEA country or Switzerland.
The full list of exceptions is available on the official website gov.uk. Travelers who meet these requirements can enter the city without a visa with the permission of the border guard, however, they must leave the country before midnight the day after arrival.
Previously, Russian citizens could visit the UK without a visa as part of a cruise if the ship did not stop in two British cities in a row and the cruise did not start or end in the UK. However, in November 2022, Pac Group and Cruclub notified customers of a change in rules: without a British visa, tourists will be denied a cruise.
Conditions of transit through the UK
Transit with a visa is mandatory for all other travelers. The application for a transit visa is submitted in the same way as for a regular tourist visa.
Transit visas are of two types:
- DATV - for those who are not going to leave the transit area of the airport, pass passport control, change the terminal. DATV costs $44 (4016 ого) in November 2023 and is valid for 24 hours, according to the British Council Indonesia portal.
- Visitor in transit visa – for those who plan to pass passport control, check baggage for the next flight, change the terminal or go to the city. The cost of such a visa is $81 (7392 .), and its validity allows you to stay in the country for up to 48 hours. In addition, a ticket to the country of destination, accommodation reservations and other evidence of no intention to stay in the UK may be required at the border.
Possible refusal to issue a visa to the UK
Refusal to obtain a visa to the UK may result from the examination of a visa application that is opposed to approval. This outcome, although not uncommon in the case of British visas, is far from being definitive. Under applicable law, every applicant has the right to know the reasons for refusing entry to England and to appeal. Often failures can be caused by the following factors:
- Wrong choice of visa type: Due to the variety of UK visa documents, travellers can often mistakenly choose an option that does not match the specific purpose of the trip.
- Incomplete package of documents: The absence of even one necessary document to issue a specific permit can lead to refusal.
- Poor translation: Insufficient knowledge of English can lead to errors when filling out the questionnaire.
- Doubts about insolvency: Information about the applicant’s financial situation may not meet current standards or the sources of income may be unclear.
- Unconfirmed data: The information provided in the statement was not confirmed during the inspection.
Once an appeal is filed, the immigration officer can review his or her decision, and a legal action to appeal is also possible.
