1. General information about obtaining a visa to Austria

For Russians visiting Austria or any other member state of the European Economic Union, it is necessary to obtain a special Schengen visa.

To visit Austria, you must obtain a special visa, which can be obtained personally by a citizen of the Russian Federation or through a legal representative at the consulate or visa center of the republic located in Russia. Applications for visa permits for children under 12 years of age are submitted by parents or persons acting as official guardians.

Documents can be submitted directly to the consular department of the Austrian Embassy in Moscow or St. Petersburg or to a specialized center in any city of Russia that has the accreditation of the consular department. Before visiting the visa center, it is recommended to make an appointment through the official website of the consulate using the electronic application form. There is also an application form and instructions on the rules of stay in Austria.

The possibility of visiting Austria on a Schengen visa obtained from a consulate of another European state is also considered. In this case, the duration of stay in the Republic should not exceed the time spent in the main country. This type of "Schengen" gives the right to transit through Austria.

It is important to comply with the requirements of the visa code when entering the Republic: with a Schengen visa, Austria is allowed to travel to all countries of the Eurozone, but time spent in the Republic should prevail.

3. Where do you need an Austrian visa?

An entry permit is required in the following cases:

  1. The purpose of visiting Austria includes transit at the airport when traveling to a third country outside the Eurozone, as well as tourism, visiting relatives, employment, treatment and other purposes.
  2. Travel all over Europe, where Austria is the first destination. In this case, it is necessary to issue a Schengen in the consulate of the Republic, if the time of stay in each planned country is the same.
  3. The main part of the trip to Europe takes place in Austria. In this case, the country of entry does not matter and you can travel to the Republic through several Schengen countries using a single visa.

All categories of Russian citizens, with the exception of holders of diplomatic passports, need to obtain a Schengen. Minors who do not have separate foreign passports must be included in the parental entry permit.

4. Types of Schengen visa categories

In accordance with the visa rules, the Austrian Consulate provides Russians with different types of entry permits, differing in validity and opportunities for visiting countries participating in the Schengen Agreement, depending on the specific purpose of the trip.

The main categories of Schengen:

Category A: These entry permits are required for transit at Austrian airports if the final destination is a third country. The visa is valid only for stay in the transit zone and does not give the right to travel in Austria and other Schengen countries.

Category C: Citizens are issued visas of this type if they plan to stay in Austria for tourist purposes, work trip, visit relatives, etc. This permit also allows you to visit other Schengen countries, but the total length of stay in Austria must exceed the time spent in other EU states.

Category D: A national permit grants the right of entry and long-term stay in Austria to work, study, participate in scientific research, etc. However, this visa is not intended for travel in the Eurozone, foreigners can only make short transit trips.

In the consular section of the Embassy of Austria, you can obtain a Schengen for various purposes:

  1. Tourism: The visa is issued for independent and organized trips, including visits to cultural and artificial facilities, treatment at balneological resorts, ski trips, etc.
  2. Russian citizens can obtain a special entry permit for business trips, corporate seminars and visits to enterprises for the exchange of experience.
  3. Students planning to study in Austria apply for a study visa for short-term courses or full-time education.
  4. Private visits: Foreigners can obtain an invitation visa from Austrian citizens or residents living in the country.

Permits issued by the consulate also differ in multiplicity, which determines the number of entries. Multiple permits allow you to cross the border with Austria without restriction, provided that the Schengen period is respected. A single-entry visa allows you to enter the country only once and acts as a transit permit when traveling to Austria through other Eurozone countries.

5. Terms of application of the Austrian visa

The duration of obtaining a Schengen visa depends on its type. Standard tourist permits are usually issued most quickly - from 5 to 14 days. Long-term permits valid for up to 6 months may take 15 to 30 days or more, depending on the set of documents provided.

6. How can I apply for a visa to Austria on my own?

The Consulate of the Republic of Austria is considered one of the strictest in relation to Russian citizens planning to visit the Schengen zone. Therefore, obtaining a visa on your own is preferable to applying to specialized agencies, as this significantly increases the likelihood of approval of the application, especially if you already have a positive experience of obtaining a Schengen.

There are two options for self-issuing a visa permit:

  1. Submission of documents to the consulate. In major cities of Russia there are official representative offices of the Republic of Austria, which receive citizens on visa processing. A visit to this office requires a pre-registration appointment as the time spent with applicants is limited to a few hours a day.

  2. Contact an accredited visa center. The Consulate of Austria allows citizens to independently obtain Schengen through special visa centers, which have a wide network of representative offices throughout Russia. For citizens living in cities without a consular department, this option is the most convenient, since it does not require a trip to another city where the consulate has its representative office.

7. What documents are needed for obtaining a visa to Austria

For Russian citizens, a clear procedure for issuing visas is established, including the fingerprinting procedure (at the first visit to the Eurozone) and the collection of a set of documents, including:

  1. International passport: It must be valid for at least 90 days after the expiration of the visa. When submitting the application, you must provide the original and a copy of the spread. A foreign passport must contain at least two blank pages for a Schengen visa to Austria.

  2. Scans of pages of a foreign passport with previous Schengen visas, if such visas were obtained earlier.

  3. Questionnaire: The electronic form is available on the website of the consular department and must be completed in German or English. After filling in the document is printed, and the applicant puts his signature and legibly writes a transcript on the last two pages.

  4. Two color photographs: Standard rectangular images measuring 3.5 × 4.5 cm, meeting the quality and printing requirements for a Schengen visa.

  5. Internal passport: The original document and scans of all completed pages, including a spread, registration, data on marital status and children.

  6. The signed obligation to comply with the rules of stay in Austria.

  7. Certificate from the employer: Official document of the organization with information about the applicant’s position, date of employment and salary.

  8. Financial Guarantees: Bank statement, ATM check or sponsorship letter confirming the availability of funds that meet the established minimum, depending on the number of days of stay in the country and the purpose of the trip.

For a tourist visa to Austria (Category C):

  1. Health insurance: A policy covering the entire territory of the Eurozone and the cost of medical care for at least 30,000 euros. Services for transportation and return of the applicant to Russia should also be provided if necessary.

  2. Confirmation of payment of consular fee: The cost of the visa depends on the type of visa and the social status of the applicant (for example, minor, student, pensioner).

  3. Factiloscopy: Since September 15, 2015, it is mandatory for all Russian citizens over the age of 12 who plan to visit Europe.

  4. Flights: Copies of confirmed round trip bookings.

8. Remote processing and submission of documents to the Consulate of Austria

The possibility of remote visa processing is not available in the consular department of the Republic of Austria. On the official web portal of the Ministry provided an application form for "Schengen", as well as the ability to record in an electronic queue online. Submission of documents is carried out exclusively in person or through an authorized representative directly to the consulate or official visa center.

9. Documents to visit Austria in other cases:

The list of certificates provided to the consulate can be expanded depending on the category of citizens, the purpose of the trip and the planned period of stay in Austria:

Travel by car: To travel to Austria by private car, you need to provide copies of a driving license that meets international standards and a compulsory vehicle insurance policy. The driver must also issue a Green Card policy in accordance with the rules of the Eurozone, the validity of which must correspond to the planned stay in the Schengen area.

Visiting Austria for the purpose of sightseeing requires the development and confirmation of the route. To obtain a visa, you must provide a confirmation of hotel reservation for the entire period of stay and a tourist voucher from an accredited Austrian travel agency.

Business travel: In order to enter Austria for the purpose of employment, an invitation from an employer or business partner from Austria must be provided, containing information about the dates of stay, the personal data of the applicant and a copy of the identity card of the responsible employee of the host party.

Private visit: Visiting relatives requires a visa issued on the basis of an electronic invitation number registered with the police of the place of residence. The document confirms the financial responsibility of the host party and further evidence of family ties may be requested. The inviting person should provide a copy of the passport and financial guarantees.

Pensioners and students: Russian citizens who have reached retirement age are required to provide an appropriate certificate to visit Austria. Children under 18 years old will need a certificate from an educational institution or a student card.

10. Austrian Consulate Requirement for Photography

The identification of a citizen at the border control is based on biometric data, therefore, the photograph used for the visa permit must meet the increased requirements:

  • A photograph with a pronounced contrast should be printed on high-quality matte paper with image parameters in accordance with the 3.5 × 4.5 cm standard. Only clear images are allowed without scratches, the effect of noise, glare and darkening on the surface.

  • The face should be full face, being in the central part of the photo and occupying from 70 to 80% of its surface.

  • The background may have shades of white and gray, contrasting with the face.

  • The photo must be taken no earlier than six months before the submission of documents for obtaining a visa.

  • If the Schengen candidate usually wears corrective glasses, they can be left in the photo. Glasses should be transparent and without glare, and their frame should not cover the eyes and eyebrows.

  • The use of headgear is prohibited, except for medical advice or religious beliefs.

  • There should be no excess cosmetics on the face, and the use of piercings and accessories that interfere with the identity of the applicant is not recommended.

  • Too thick hair should be removed to ensure openness and sufficient lighting of the forehead and ears.

11. Documents for obtaining an Austrian visa for children

Family travel to Austria with children involves obtaining separate visas for each minor, even if the child is included in the passports of parents and does not have their own foreign passport. The procedure for issuing a Schengen permit includes the provision of additional documents, in addition to the main list:

Documents for obtaining a visa to Austria:

  1. Questionnaire: The form is completed by both parents or their substitutes, acting as the official guardians of the child. The last two pages of the questionnaire are certified by personal signatures with decryption. The questionnaire provides personal data of parents.

  2. International passport: The document must be valid for at least 90 days at the end of the intended trip. In the absence of a foreign passport, it is necessary to enter the child in the foreign passports of parents.

  3. Original birth certificate: The document is translated into German and supplied with an apostille. Copies of the certificate certified by a notary are also provided.

  4. Standard photo size 3.5×4.5 cm, 1 pc.

  5. Health insurance: The policy must cover the entire Schengen area if you plan to visit other European countries in one trip. The amount of coverage of medical expenses is not less than 30 thousand euros, including inpatient treatment and transportation to the Russian Federation.

  6. Departure permit: It is signed by one or both parents/guardians if the child travels to Austria with only one parent or accompanied by a third person (relatives, acquaintances, teacher, etc.). The document is signed with the participation of a notary.

  7. Power of attorney: Signed by the parents/guardians of the child for his departure from the country, accompanied by a third party.

  8. Financial security: Confirmation of financial support for the trip is a bank statement or a letter from the sponsor (parents).

12. Validity of different categories of Austrian visas

The validity of a visa that allows you to visit Austria depends on its category:

The process of obtaining a visa through the Austrian Embassy

Transit resolution "A" remains valid within 1-5 days.

A short-term Schengen category C visa will normally remain valid for the period corresponding to the duration of the insurance policy. The maximum allowed time of stay in the country for Russian citizens is 90 days every 180 days.

National visa "D" provides the opportunity to travel around the country from 3 to 6 months. However, this visa does not grant the right to permanent residence in the country or to purchase real estate.

13. Options for refusal of an Austrian visa

Refusal to obtain an Austrian visa is not uncommon, since the consulate conducts a strict selection of candidates for entry, justifying this by security requirements.

Russian citizens may face a negative decision in the following situations:

  1. Insufficient financial support for the trip. The absence of the required amount in the bank account (compared to the minimum) significantly reduces the chances of visiting the Republic of Austria.
  2. Lack of necessary documents. An incomplete set of required certificates or overdue confirmations is a valid reason for refusal.
  3. Providing knowingly false information. All data provided is carefully checked, so it is important to provide only true information and original documents.

The refusal is accompanied by an official document indicating the reason in alphanumeric form (letter - type of visa, number - the basis for a negative decision):

Refusal codes for issuing a visa to Austria:

  • A-1, C-1, D-1: Denied. The reason may be the revealed fact of an offence on a previous trip to the Schengen area.
  • A-2, C-2, D-2: Conversation with the Consul. A call to the consulate may be required to clarify the data provided by the applicant.
  • A-3, P-3, D-3: Incomplete set of documents. In this case, you can re-apply, correcting the identified shortcomings.
  • A-4, C-4, D-4: Indefinite Failure. Gross violations of the rules of the visa code can deprive the applicant of a chance to visit Austria.

In case of refusal, the applicant has the right to appeal, which is submitted in person to the consulate within 14 days from the date of return of the documents.
