Emancipation Day in Jamaica

Description:

Emancipation is liberation from any dependence.
Many Jamaicans today do not understand what emancipation means. Nevertheless, many books and articles have been written about the abolition of slavery, the most significant event in the history of the Caribbean.

Emancipation (Latin emancipatio) - liberation from any dependence, the abolition of any restrictions, the equation of rights.

For more than 160 years, Jamaica sought freedom from slavery and became an independent nation. However, it was not until August 1, 1834 that all slaves were officially declared free, but "real" freedom came four years later. Emancipation Day was first observed on August 1, 1962.
