National Heroes Day in Jamaica

Heroes' DayOn this day, celebrations in honor of heroes are held throughout the island. Jamaica is famous for its heroes. Not many, though! There are seven of them, including human rights activist Marcus Garvey and former Prime Minister Alexander Bustamante. They are all leaders and important historical figures who have made significant contributions to Jamaican culture.

Many residents of Jamaica advocate that the legendary reggae performer Bob Marley, the first Jamaican musician to achieve world fame and recognition, should be among the honored heroes!

The Order of the National Hero is awarded to Jamaican citizens for merits of the most significant character for Jamaica.
