Ocular bridge
Uonomachi, Nagasaki, Nagasaki Prefecture 850-0874, Japan
Description:
Over the Nagashima River, in the city of Nagasaki, a stone bridge stretches. The Ocular Bridge is a cultural landmark of Japan.
The name of the bridge comes from its shape. It is made in the form of two arches that are reflected in the water, creating the image of glasses. The length of the structure is 22 meters, the width is 3.65 meters, and the height above the river is 5.46 meters.
The ocular or point bridge was built in 1634. It was founded by a Chinese monk named Moji, the second abbot of Kofukuji Temple. After 1648, when the bridge suffered from flooding, the entire structure was completely restored. In 1982, the Japanese landmark was again destroyed by flooding, but it was repaired and today it consists of the same bridge stone, carried by the flood waters to the lower reaches of the river.
