Museum "Dejima Dutch Post Office"

Japan Nagasaki-ken, Nagasaki-shi, Dejimamachi, 6

About the company:

The Museum "Dutch station Dejima" is located on the Japanese island of Kyushu, in Nagasaki Prefecture. The museum was created on the site where once there was an artificial trading island Dejima, so-called "window to Europe", located here in the XVII-XIX centuries.

Dejima Island was built in 1634, under the decree of the shogun Iemitsu, and was originally used as a warehouse for Portuguese merchants and traders. In 1637 there was a rebellion in Japan, which ordered the expulsion of all Europeans from the country, but the Dutch decided to leave and allow them to conduct trade through the port of Nagasaki, as they professed Calvinism and did not engage in missionary activities.

The museum in its collection presents the reconstruction of the premises and buildings of the trading stations of the Dutch, objects of their everyday life, as well as scientific instruments of those times.
