Nagoya castle
1-1 Honmaru, Naka Ward, Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan
Description:
Nagoya Castle, built in 1612, is the most famous landmark of the city of Nagoya, which is the fourth most populous in the country.
The castle, located on the site of an abandoned fortification, was built on the orders of Shogun Ieyasa Tokugawa for his ninth son Yoshinao. The shogun received funds for the grandiose construction from local feudal lords, including his opponents, under the guise of voluntary donations.
The castle is a classic embodiment of the architecture of the Azuchi-Momoyama period of 1568-1600. On the tower roof of the castle you can see two gilded sculptures in the form of dolphin-like sea monsters, which are designed to protect the fortification from fires and hostile machinations.
