Nikkō-shi

Daiyuinbeyou Temple

Japan, Tokyo, Nikko

Description:

A short walk from the tomb of Ieyasu Tokugawa in Nikko is the Daiyuinbyo temple with the mausoleum of his grandson Iemitsu.

Unlike Ieyasu, the grandson was not deified in the Shinto pantheon, so the mausoleum is not called a sanctuary. It is somewhat more modest in scale, but made in the same style of gongeng-zukuri, magnificently decorated with gold, wood carvings, sculptural images. Although Daiyuinbö is a Shinto temple, it is easy to find the presence of gods and symbols of the Buddhist pantheon. The decoration is dominated by Chinese motifs - with cirins, lions, tigers, dragons and flowers.
